- Konomis Nicolaos -

KONOMIS N.C., Classicist. Born in Morphou, a town in Cyprus; he studied at the Philosophical School of the University of Athens (1946-1950). For his postgraduate studies he attended Oxford University (1954-1956), B. Litt., and Cambridge University (1957). He took his doctorate from the University of Athens (1958). He taught Classics at the University of Cape Town (1958-1965), when he was elected full professor of classical philology at the University of Ioannina, and since 1969 Professor of Greek Language and Literature at the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki. In his studies he is mainly busy with the critical restoration and interpretation of ancient Greek texts. He engaged particularly in the attic orators, the lexicographers and ancient lyric choral poetry. For his Bibliotheca Teubneriana edition of attic orators he was honoured by the Academy of Athens. He was dean of the Philosophical School (1973-1974) and rector (1978-1979) of the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki, president of the State Theatre of Northern Greece (1977-1980), president of the Society of Greek-Arabic Studies (1980-1995). Since 1977 he is director of the periodical Ἑλληνικά, honorary member of the Istituto Siciliano di Studi Bizantini (1994) and the Society for the promotion of Greek Studies in England (1996), honorary doctor of the University of Cyprus (1999) and member of the Accademia Pontaniana. He was President of the Academy of Athens (2001).

He was awarded the higher Taxiarch of Phoenix  and other medals.
